She is a popular actress of Bollywood, who is more known for her incredible performance in the British based movie called Brick Lane. She hails from Pune wherein she was born and brought up in a non film background. Her father is a businessman, while her mother is a political science profession Pune University. Later she shifted to New Delhi with her family wherein she completed her college doing majors in Chemistry from Delhi University and finally landing up in NSD (National School of Drama) to learn acting and filmmaking. Soon she was seen getting attached to a theatre group wherein she worked with a number of plays in India and Europe.
Her first movie was Swaraj, which even bagged National Film Award under best film category. She then did a German movie called Shadows of Time, which garnered good reviews from the critics. This gave her exposure to international film festivals including Berlin and Toronto. She then worked in a Indian and French movie called Hava Aney Dey, which again bagged a couple of award including one at Durban International Film Festival. This gave her other movies including Bibar, Strings and Kasturi. The former was awarded with a number of recognition. Later as said above, she did the British movie called Brick Lane, which gave her a very good exposure and recognition over the global level. She was even nominated at the prestigious British independent film awards along with veterans like Anne Hathaway and Judi Dench.
She is referred in B Town and in Indian media as a princess of Parallel Cinema for producing and working in offbeat movies covering a number of social based movies. Her upcoming film called Bhopal: Prayer for Rain based on the tragedy of Bhopal Gas will be hitting soon. She also worked with Abhay Deol in the movie called Road. She has made India proud by making her presence felt even at 62nd Cannes Film Festival wherein she was adjusted as the best actress in New York Film Festical for her movie called Bombay Summer. With doing so many overseas projects, she is one of the influential faces of India with huge presence in the theatre and cinema world of many overseas locations.
She is trained as Hindustani Classical Vocalist, wherein she has sung for movies like Page 3, Road and a couple of her own projects. She was even seen singing at Royal Opera House at London wherein the popular British Composer Jocelyn Pook was performing. Apart from being the part of so many movies, she was also seen as judge in 2010 Asia Pacific Screen Awards. Now she is busy shooting for smaller screen TV series called I Love New Year along with Sunny Deol, which is directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru. Her movie Dekh Indian Circus won a number of audience awards in Busan International Film Festival, including even the National Film Award as well. She was even seen in Gulab Gang.
